PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN/ASSOCIATE CERTIFICATION

Patient Care Technicians ( known as PCT's/PCA's or Nurse Techs) 

play a vital role in patient care. Whether you are working in a hospital, doctor’s office, nursing home, or long-term care (LTC) facility, you’ll be working directly with patients and hand-in-hand with nurses.

Patient Care includes but is not limited to:

  • Drawing blood

  • Performing EKG's

  • Administering IVs

  • Serving meals

  • Changing bedding

  • Assisting with restroom needs

  • Measuring and monitoring vital signs

  • Managing food and liquid intake

  • Handling safety checks

  • Offering emotional support to patients and families

*Certified CNA's can sit for our PCT/PCA certification exam if they have completed a course in phlebotomy and EKG. ​

PCT/PCA EXAM ELIGIBILITY

Certification pathways are as easy as 1, 2, 3!

You successfully completed a program that included medical training in the field of Patient Care Technician/ Associates within the last 5 years and you possess a high school diploma or GED.

You may also qualify if: 

You can produce an official letter (on company letterhead) from a past or present employer stating that you have two years experience or more. 

Additional Pathways

You have worked in the medical field in this country or abroad and can submit proof such as a medical or college degree, vocational diploma, or military certificate. 


This is only after the documentation has been assessed and approved by one of the companies listed on the NYC Foreign Education Evaluation Guide. Contact NPTAA for more information. 

If you meet the criteria in Box 1, 2 or 3 you are eligible to sit for your NPTAA certification exam!
