A surgical technician, also called a scrub, scrub tech, or operating room technician is an allied health professional working as a part of the team delivering surgical care. They’re a crucial part of a surgical care team, working alongside the surgeon, the surgeon’s assistants, the nurses, and the professional providing anesthesia.

WHAT DOES A SURGICAL TECHNICIAN DO?

   Surgical Technicians may assist in the following ways:

- Preparing operating rooms and patients for surgery 

- Set up instruments and ensure all equipment is working the way it should

- Gather and prepare any sterile solutions or medications that the surgical team may need

- Clean and disinfecting incision sites

Take your exam. Choose one of the following scheduling options to sit for your exam: 

  • An NPTAA affiliate testing center near you 

  • Your school or medical training facility

  • Through live proctoring at the location of your choice.

NPTAA will email your exam score within 2 days of scoring your exam for all online exams. Certifications can instantly be downloaded and printed out from your digital wallet in Certemy.

Certified Surgical Technician: List

SURGICAL TECHNICIAN EXAM ELIGIBILITY

Certification pathways are as easy as 1, 2, 3!

You successfully completed a program that included medical training in the field of surgical technician or OR Tech within the last 5 years and you possess a high school diploma or GED.

You may also qualify if: 

You can produce an official letter (on company letterhead) from a past or present employer stating that you have two years experience or more. 

Additional Pathways

You have worked in the medical field in this country or abroad and can submit proof such as a medical or college degree, vocational diploma, or military certificate. 


This is only after the documentation has been assessed and approved by one of the companies listed on the NYC Foreign Education Evaluation Guide. Contact NPTAA for more information. 

If you meet the criteria in Box 1, 2 or 3 you are eligible to sit for your NPTAA certification exam!
